BurnProof: a technology developed by Sanyo Corporation, used in Plextor drives, I think TDK has it as well, maybe some others as well. Basically it allows the laser to pause during burning, allowing the disc to "catch up" so to speak. It allows you to do many things at once - if you hit a snag where a regular drive would get a buffer underrun, these drives slow down a bit and continue burning... so you can surf, email, whatever, while you're burning and never get another coaster!! i used it on every cd i burned with my plextor while doing many other things online, and i never even noticed the slowdown at all...
